Bandaz Begs to Differ

Why do smokers get more breaks throughout the day?

Posted in For the Workplace by bandaz on November 4, 2009

What makes a smoker so special? Why do they get to take breaks more frequently than the rest of us?
If I smoke cigars, do I get a cigar break? That would be about a 30 – 40 minute break mid-day. That seems fair, doesn’t it?

What about a hookah pipe? Suppose I smoke a hookah pipe as per my local custom, my tradition, our tradition [roll the 'r' to generate Fiddler effect.] Does that mean I get to sit down outside the office, fire up some charcoal briquette (sp?), whip out the ‘ole apple flavored ‘bacci, and bubble away? (Bubble away as per the sound of the inhalation and water reaction to that inhalalation.

And what’s up with the spelling of briquette? How did we get from brick to briq, to bricket to briquette? Why didn’t we completely usurp that word from the French?

It’s surprising to me they allow smoke breaks as they are enabling a habit that honestly and ultimately costs the tax payers millions in healthcare related costs. That aside, I have nothing against smokers or their breaks. I have a problem with how they get started which typically is a result of a brilliant ad campaign or even worse an endorsement by a celebrity. Now that is what irks me most. Unless that celebrity is HOT in which case I will let slide.

Sorry for the typos. I’m typing this on my phone while driving home from work and smoking a fatty.

Typing while driving and smoking a fatty!!! I think typing while driving will kill more people that any claims of second hand smoke.

As for smoke breaks, they give you more of chance to regroup!!!

I hear ya. I wasn’t really typing while driving, just smoking a fatty…

        But I digress…

with all the benefits being sucked out of our jobs, the workers should start instituting benefits of their own…

        pole dancing
        mud wrestling
        Friday keg parties
        Annulment Afternoons
        Brick House BBQs

        what else?

I’ll let you in on a little secret about smokers at work. Smokers are ENCOURAGED to take a lot of smoke breaks at work. Sound outrageous? Let me explain.

Smokers are the CIA/NSA of the company. Want to know who is getting fired, and the real reason why? Smokers know. Want to know who is getting the big promotion? Smokers know that too. Want to feel out how the staff is reacting to the new implemented policy? Smokers.

It’s wise for managers to have smoking “assets” on their teams. They can use smokers to spread all kinds of information, and, more importantly, disinformation. Smokers are the ultimate tool in managers arsenal.

Larry are you suggesting that the smokers are standing outside and spying on everyone? Who’s coming? Who’s going?
